    This exciting red fleshed apple developed in Germany also known as Tickled Pink has the most remarkable and unusual red juicy flesh. The sweet crisp fruits are delicious and are packed with vitamins and antioxidants.   

  Apple ‘Baya Marisa’ – a variety revolutionises the apple world.  This sweet tasting apple and discover that the flesh is deep red.  The fruit of apple Baya Marisa is not only juicy and perfect for eating straight from the tree but it’s also great for cooking or making pink apple juice. What’s more, the tree itself is a beauty too.  In spring it is covered in deep crimson blossom, making it a delightful feature in the garden or an eye-catcher on the allotment and in the orchard. The fruit can be harvested in September and October.  

 


      Baya Marisa, the red-fleshed apple variety, whose fruits taste so delicious. The attractive colour of its fruit flesh fascinates and invites to eat the apple directly.  On the tree the apples appear just like any other red apple, but cut one open and the striking red flesh is revealed. The flavour is tart but pleasantly mild, and the flesh is very juicy.



       Apple Baya Marisa is not self-pollinating so for the heaviest crops it is best grown with another apple such as Gala or Golden Delicious. Height and spread up to 2m.  The Bavarian Centre of Pomology and Fruit Breeding in Germany were successful in breeding this red fleshed and tasteful variety: Baya Marisa.  Baya Marisa resulted from a long breeding process: An acid, but red fleshed variety was crossed with a tasteful dessert apple. As the first variety of a new generation of red fleshed apple varieties, Baya Marisa was selected out of thousands of progenies.



      Jelly and juice are attractively red coloured and give the products a distinctive note and red cider is the top-class insider’s choice. Baya Marisa apple juice is dark red and has unsurpassed colour stability. It can be blended with 25% juice of white-fleshed apples.  Dried apple slices or chips made from Baya Marisa shine out from the conventional products. 



      Apples are healthy in diverse ways.  One factor contributing to this health value is the content of red pigments, the anthocyanins. In red fleshed apples, not only the fruit skin contains such compounds, but the whole fruit flesh.  The red pigments, counting to the group of phenols, have proven to be health beneficial by weakening certain harmful reactions in human cells which may damage the genetic material and thus may lead to cancer (radical scavengers). The red colour is conserved after processing.  That makes apple products even more attractive and highly enjoyable.



      Tree: Medium to strong growth, medium branching density.  Flower: Red coloured, very attractive petals. Diploid. Good pollinator. Early flowering time. Thinning needed.   Fruit: Fruit medium sized or large (170-200g), roundish shape. Dark red over colour(90%), lenticells clearly visible. Fruit flesh almost completely intensively red coloured.  The fruit contains medium to high malic acid content.



        This red-fleshed apple grows well in any fertile garden soil. Soak the roots for approx 2 hrs before transplanting. Choose a spot in direct sunlight where it will eventually grow into a fairly large tree.  Prepare a large planting hole and loosen the soil. Improve poor garden soil by adding compost and fertilizer. Place the root ball at the same height in the planting hole as it was in the pot. Next to the root ball push a stake firmly into the ground for support.

      Fill the planting hole with soil and press firmly. Water it well after planting and for the next few weeks. Harvest fruits in September and the apples can be stored until January. You can also plant the red fleshy apple tree in a large flowerpot or planter.  If grown in a pot the tree’s eventual height will be much smaller.
