Apple - Kissabel Orange

          Apple - Kissabel Orange
          Apple – malus domestica

Kissabel Orange is a red fleshed apple with an unusual yellow skin with a pink undertone. The flesh is quite heavily suffused with an attractive pink-red colouration, almost in striations. It is a firm, crisp apple: quite hard. While good sweetness is evident, this is quite an acidic apple.

This attractive apple with a crisp texture and a tangy flavour and pink flesh.  Consumers will be attracted to the colour of Kissabel Orange apple and other similar varieties, both in the skin and flesh, but the variety will be more pleasing to consumers who like tangy fruit.  This apple variety originated in France. The development of Kissabel branded varieties is controlled by a consortium called Ifored.

More than 20 years ago, a group of passionate breeders in France started to cross-cultivate apple varieties with wild red-fleshed selections on a quest to produce a truly unique apple. Multiple crosses and four generations later, the first selections were commercialised, offering an exciting and distinctive eating experience.  The Kissabel range offers varieties that differ in flesh shade, skin colour, flavour and harvesting period, but all will be marketed under the Kissabel with "I am red inside" banner.

Kissabel Orange apple has an attractive bright-orange skin hiding bold pink flesh that is firm and juicy, with a perfect sweet-tart balance.  During the breeding process, it quickly became apparent that there were three colours emerging. It was felt the best option was to introduce a range to reflect the unique assortment of red-fleshed apples, which differ in flesh tone, skin colour, flavour and harvest timing, all to be marketed under the Kissabel brand.

Kissabel’s brand philosophy is to offer a range of innovative, completely natural, tempting apples, astonishing in both appearance and taste. Kissabel fruit is the outcome of more than 20 years of research conducted with exclusively natural methods by French breeder IFO, in which red-flesh wild apples were crossed with varieties of outstanding quality in terms of flavour, keeping, appearance and fruit size.

The Kissabel brand is characterised by the surprise of crunching into an apple and discovering its unique flesh colour and amazing flavour.  The Ifored partners are preparing for the release of Kissabel apples all over the world in the next 5 years.  The exciting Kissabel range will attract and retain a new generation of consumer thanks to their distinctive sensory characteristics.

The result is a unique assortment of red-flesh apples, which differ in flesh shade, skin colour, flavour and harvest timing. Kissabel fruit from three varieties have been chosen for the first commercial tests of the brand in Europe, and made its way to Australian orchards in winter 2017. With a unique assortment in the Kissabel range available, Montague aims to plant 14 varieties in the coming years, expecting to have Kissabel apples available for consumers post 2020.

A natural kiss that reawakens the zest for discovery in consumers and invites them to reveal the surprising pink to red heart. This is Kissabel, the new brand chosen for the red-flesh apples of Ifored. Grown by an international consortium comprising 14 of the biggest premium apple producers from five continents, including Australia’s leading family-owned fresh produce company, Montague.

First developed in France, Kissabel apples will eventually be grown and sold by producers in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
