Fruits name starts with the letter " B "


1    Babaco Fruit  
      Babaco Fruit  (Champagne fruit, mountain papaya )  

   The babaco is a distinctive five-sided torpedo-shaped fruit. Related closely to the pawpaw.  Its smooth, thin skin is edible, and is yellow in colour when ripe. The babaco’s flesh is yellow to white in colour, and is sweetly flavoured with hints of pineapple, paw paw and strawberries. Its refreshing and slightly effervescent texture gives babaco its alternative name – champagne fruit.

2    Bayberry  Fruit – Chinese -  (Myrica rubra)  
      Bayberry Fruit - Chinese  also known as Yangmei fruit  


     Bayberry Fruit - Chinese  (Myrica rubra) or Yangmei fruit  are predominantly found in China where they are cultivated for their fruit and used as an ornamental along streets and in parks. They are also referred to as Chinese bayberry, Japanese bayberry, Yumberry, or Chinese strawberry trees. They are indigenous to eastern Asia.

             Yangmei fruit trees are evergreens that produce 
purplish round fruit that looks somewhat like a berry, hence their alternate name of Chinese strawberry. The fruit is actually not a berry, however, but a drupe like cherries. That means that there is a single stone seed in the center of the fruit surrounded by juicy pulp. The fruit is sweet/tart and high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The fruit is often used to make healthy juices as well as being canned, dried, pickled and even made into an alcoholic wine-like beverage.

3    Bilimbi Fruit                                       
      Bilimbi fruit - Averhhoa bilimbi

    Bilimbi fruit are a tropical fruit, botanically classified as Averhhoa bilimbi. The Bilimbi is closely related to the starfruit, and is a domesticated species. The juice of the Bilimbi fruit contains high amounts of oxalate, an organic acid found in plants. Oxalate, or oxalic acid, is what gives the Bilimbi fruit its characteristically sour taste. But if consumed in excess, oxalate can lead to an increased risk of kidney stones and even kidney failure. Bilimbi fruit trees are small, growing to around 5 to15 meters in height. Each tree is able to bear hundreds of fruit, with yields of around 50 kilograms per year.

4     Black apple Fruit  
       Black apple -planchonella australis

Black apple (Planchonella australis; Sapotaceae) also known as wild plum, yellow buttonwood, black plum and yellow bulletwood

   Edible fruit are 20-50 mm long, purplish or black, containing 3-5 brown and shiny seeds, 2 cm long and ripe from september to november.    

   Black apple tree, is a medium to tall rainforest tree of the family Sapotaceae native to Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. This tree is an evergreen tree with a dense crown; it can grow up to 30 metres tall.  The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and is also a source of a high quality commercial timber. It is often cultivated as a specialist timber crop in Australia and also has potential as a commercial bush food crop.

5     Breadfruit                                          
       Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) 

     Breadfruit is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family.  Breadfruits come in round, oval and oblong shapes, with a weight that ranges between 250 gms to 2 kgs. A mature breadfruit has a smooth or bumpy outer skin and a flesh that looks creamy white or pale yellow. A ripe breadfruit has a yellow or yellow-green skin and soft, creamy flesh that tastes little sweet. Breadfruit must be roasted, boiled or fried before eating.  Most breadfruits are seedless.
          Breadfruit trees are one of the highest yielding food plants known. A single tree can produce between 50 to 150 fruits per year, yield varies between wet and dry areas. This extremely versatile fruit can be prepared and eaten in all stages of development and maturity, ripe as a fruit or mature as a vegetable.

6    Bushukan Fruit                                                                 
      Bushukan - Buddha Hand Citrus - Fingered Citron

    They grow on small evergreen trees with long branches covered in thorns. Its leaves are large and pale green and grow up to six inches, while the tree itself grows from three to five feet. The flowers on it are white and have a purplish tint and grow in clusters. It has a thick peel and only a small amount of flesh. It is juiceless and sometimes seedless yet very fragrant.
     This fruit is made up of long finger like sections that all grow from the same base giving the illusion of a multi-fingered hand. When it comes to eating it, this citrus fruit is nothing like average orange or lemon. It has no juice or pulp, it is essentially made up of skin and pith. However unlike all other citrus fruit, the pith of the Buddha's Hand is not bitter. 
      The fruit is often candied, dried or canned and used to complete all manner of sweet and savoury dishes. This fruit is also extremely fragrant; many Japanese and Chinese families place this fruit around the home as it gives off a pleasant smell.

7    Blood Lime Fruit                                                 
      Blood lime - citrus aurantifolia

     Blood Lime tree produces deep blood-red colored fruit, on an attractive, dense and upright shrub to small tree, 2m to 3 m high and 2m wide.  The leaves are oval shaped with approximately 25 to 35mm long by 15mm wide.  The tree can also be planted as an ornamental tree.   The crop is carried on long weeping shoots, which covered later by a dense canopy growth.  Pruning and nutrition management may be necessary to reduce this growth. It helps to minimize fruit damage and make harvesting easier.  The oval fruit drop to the ground when they are fully ripened.
      Fruit skin, flesh and juice of blood limes are blood red in color. It is an attractive fruit with a very acidic taste. The fruits are lime shaped, 20-30mm wide.  Juice squeezed from the fruit has a sharp, crisp and clean flavor with pH approx 3.4.  The blood limes flesh is unable to cut into segments. 
      The fruit can be as an attractive garnish for sweet and savory dishes.  The fruits are used in a range of value-added products likely marmalades, preserves, syrups, juices, beverages and sauces.

8    Barbados Gooseberry fruit     
      Barbados Gooseberry - pereskia aculeate


     Barbados gooseberry is a Woody shrub when young, but grows into climbing, leafy cactus, with branches are up to 10m (30 ft) long. It has fragrant flowers which can be lemon, sweet, or repulsive smelling and round yellow-red berries.  Other names are Tsunya, lemon vine, pereskia, blade apple, surinam gooseberry, west Indian gooseberry, spanish gooseberry, lemon vine, sweet mary and leaf cactus.
       The berries can be eaten raw or stewed, or cooked down with sugar to make jams, sauces, compotes or curds.  The berries are round or oval in shape and orange or dark yellow in colour. The skin is smooth and thin and small leaves grow out of the skin. Inside, the opaque flesh contains numerous dark brown or black seeds. The flesh is soft and juicy.

9     Butter Fruit   
        Butter Fruit (avocado) – persea americana

Butter fruit (avocado) is a tropical or subtropical fruit native from South America, which has been referred to as the most nutritious of all fruits. It is highly valued not only for its unique texture, exquisite taste and aroma, and nutritional profile, but also for the numerous healthy benefits that it possesses. For all of this, avocado has gained worldwide recognition and its consumption has considerably increased in the last years.

Avocados are an ancient fruits and originated from Central America and Mexico. This bright green fruit with a large pit and dark leathery skin.  These fruits are commonly called as butter fruits in India. This fruit looks similar to pear fruit. This fruits are good source of nutrients compared to other fruits.

The fruit of this plant, is botanically a large berry containing a single large seed. Avocados are commercially valuable and are cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. They have fleshy body that may be pear-shaped, egg-shaped, or spherical. Commercially, they ripen after harvesting.  Avocado trees are partially self-pollinating, and are often propagated through grafting to maintain predictable fruit quality and quantity. In 2017, Mexico produced 34% of the world supply of avocados.
