      Zapote-blanco - casimiroa edulis   

      This is a species of tropical fruiting tree in the family Rutaceae, native to eastern Mexico and Central America south to Costa Rica. Other names are Casimiroa, White sapote and  Mexican apple.

        The Zapote-blanco is a distant cousin of the citrus family and these evergreen trees can grow from anywhere between 5 to 15 meters. The silky smooth white flesh has a taste that is very similar to an avocado and it is believed that this fruit just may be Nature’s answer to colon cancer.

       This fruit should never be consumed in an unripe state and it should especially not be given to children unless ready for eating either. Some of the side-effects that on eating unripe fruits - an irritating itchy sensation in the throat, ulcers in the mouth and throat or even sudden difficulty in breathing.

        This fruit besides being an excellent ingredient to add to desserts and other fruit based treats, can be consumed just as it is for a snack. This fruit can successfully help to prevent anemia as it contains a large helping of both folic acid and iron. The fruit does a great job of dispelling any mucus that may be left over in the chest and respiratory system. Regular intake of the fruit can help keep bones in great health. The presence of minerals and calcium helps to ensure that bones stay healthy.
